Position Summary

StratComm leads an important role in helping to shape and strengthen San Diego State University’s brand and visibility of the Office of the President and campus-wide initiatives. The team also advances institutional effectiveness in marketing, communications, and both community and governmental affairs. StratComm is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as a Communications and Digital Services Assistant. The ideal candidate should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and a community orientation. 

Reporting to the Senior Director of Digital Communications, working closely with the Communications and Digital Services Specialist, as well periodic support offered to the other members of the StratComm team, the Communications and Digital Services Assistant will support StratComm’s technology communications which include assistance with setting up and managing email campaigns and assisting with website updates. 

This position will support the development of email campaigns for university employees within the department’s marketing automation tool, and assist as needed with other email communications and marketing efforts. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Email marketing campaigns and weekly newsletters
  • Website updates
  • Project management system oversight 
  • Managing campus communication systems; freeway sign and events calendar
  • Oversee general campus and community email
  • Campus partner user support

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills 

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in marketing, communication, or related field.
  • Ability to organize and plan work and projects including handling multiple priorities.
  • Detail orientation and ability to facilitate general copy editing.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the workgroup and serve as a liaison for StratComm.
  • Basic knowledge of email campaign setup.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS.
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,106 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,923 - $5,283 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
