The Assistant Director of the Undocumented Resource Center (URC) assists in the day-to-day support to and oversight of center staff, student employees, volunteers, and interns. Responsibilities include ensuring a physical space, which fosters safe, inclusive, and affirming social and educational interactions for undocumented students utilizing the Center, as well as responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues particularly as they relate to URC and other underrepresented groups. The incumbent will represent SDSU to external community and governmental organizations and will promote the URC and raise awareness of related issues through supporting events, representation on campus-wide committees, programs, and materials.
The Assistant Director serves as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. The incumbent will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University employees to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social justice, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. The Assistant Director will also collaborate with Center leadership, student staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 6/30/2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper-division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
- A Master’s degree in Counseling, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, or a related field.
- Bilingual or multilingual.
- Minimum of three (3) years demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience working with diverse populations of undocumented and mixed immigration background students.
- Possess a working knowledge of undocumented/DACAmented policies and procedures, academic program and student support services.
- Basic understanding of immigration policy in the United States (ex. DACA, TPS, Asylum, Refugee).
- Experience working with individuals who are undocumented or have refugee or asylee statues, including mixed-status families. These roles can be within higher education (colleges and universities, including two-years college or technical), secondary education (middle and high school) or community based-organizations.
- Prior experience in higher education.
- Experience working from anti-racist, queer, and feminist frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized undocumented students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture.
- Competency in cross-cultural communication.
- Possession of leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, passion and creativity.
- Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.
- Extensive knowledge, sensitivity, passion and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of undocumented and mixed immigration status students.
- Possess knowledge of academic advising
- Possess strong communication skills, both oral and written, including all aspects of administrative writing techniques integral to carrying out the responsibilities of the position.
- Experience working with students from low income, traditionally underrepresented, undocumented and/or traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Previous outreach or recruitment experience.
- Ability to plan, schedule, supervise, direct, record, and follow up on meetings internally and externally to the campus.
- Ability to develop annual plans and detailed timelines.
- Ability to produce accurate and timely correspondence and reports by researching, gathering, analyzing, and formatting information as requested
- Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
- Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events, particularly those that are applicable to the undocumented community
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, administrators, and community constituencies regarding issues that impact undocumented and mixed immigration status students.
- Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
- Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
- Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.
- Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,691 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
