Position Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure,  services, and strategy necessary to support the University’s mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.  

Web Services and Infrastructure is responsible for the planning, development, implementation,  and management of web services for San Diego State University. This position will play a key role in serving as an institutional leader in the planning, implementation, and ongoing improvement of web communications systems and processes developed by Web & Digital  Communications.  

Under the direction of the Interim Director of Web Services and Infrastructure, SDSU is seeking a full-time web professional who is capable of working in a transformative environment with our team members, and customers to adapt university websites for management in our web content management system, (Omni CMS). 

Expectations and impact:

  • Fast learner and expert user of Omni CMS.

  • Assist customers with migration and project plan work.

  • Implement new Omni templates for new and existing university areas.

  • Reconfigure websites to run within the CMS.

  • Architect code structure and plan layouts.

  • Contribute code improvements to enhance processes.

  • Assist with developing custom modules and plugins.

  • Serve as a resource for the university web community.

  • Act as an administrative backup for web infrastructure and hosting platforms.

 This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in applications programming and systems analysis and related programming support functions is a prerequisite.  This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Analyst/Programmer, depending on the position assignment, may include working knowledge of a specific industry standard applications programming language and knowledge of standard systems analysis techniques. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with enterprise education software applications and web-based applications in development and technical support role.

  • Experience with XML/XSL for developing web templates.

  • Experience using Omni CMS is a plus.

  • Experience with relational databases, such as MySQL and MS SQL Server. 

  • Experience in developing Web APIs and/or RESTful Web Services.

  • Familiarity with deploying and managing cloud infrastructure and services, such as Azure and AWS.

  • Familiarity with project management basics such as project planning, communication plans, and deployment planning. 

Specialized Skills 

  • Extensive knowledge of front-end development languages and ability to hand code HTML,  CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 AA web accessibility standards, including the use of semantic  HTML and ARIA.

  • Knowledge of mobile-first and responsive design principles using front-end frameworks and grid systems.

  • Experience with implementing, configuring, administering, and supporting web content management systems.

  • Experience in at least two programming/scripting languages (Java, C, Bash/Shell, Python,  PHP, JavaScript). 

  • Experience with Apache, IIS, or Nginx web servers.

  • Ability to work effectively with people with differing levels of technical knowledge.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (both oral and written).

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,250  per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,372 - $10,792 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy 

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus.  Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine.  Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.  

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
