The mission of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) and Ethnic Affairs is to serve students from low-income backgrounds and historically underserved communities by providing innovative programs and services that facilitate the successful recruitment, retention, and development of scholars and leaders as they persist toward a university degree. EOP assists students in achieving academic success and working through educational, psychological, social, and economic challenges through their college experience by providing a comprehensive program of support services. EOP also supports students who are former foster youth, wards of the court, under legal guardianship, or unaccompanied youth through the Guardian Scholars Program. In addition, EOP supports undocumented students and allies.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of EOP/Ethnic Affairs, the EOP Counselor is responsible for providing holistic counseling and academic advising for EOP students regarding course selection, evaluation, adjustment from high school and/or community college, financial aid referrals, personal counseling related to self-awareness, personal growth, peer relationships, family expectations/problems, career investigation, academic probation, and residential life. In addition, counselors also work with various retention initiatives to help students progress towards their degree in a timely manner. These are, but are not limited to, probation/disqualification, not enrolled, high achievers, SAP, etc.
The EOP Counselor also is responsible for the coordination of student service areas, events, and programs (e.g. EOP graduation, Summer Bridge, etc.) and supports other department initiatives.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper-division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Experience: Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with major responsibility for a professional career or personal counseling.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,691 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month.
SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
