Position Summary

The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University.  Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department.  The offices include the following:  The Aztec Club, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, Corporate Sales, Development, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.

The function of the San Diego State University Athletic Facilities and Operations Department is to implement strategies to effectively manage and perform daily functions of all Athletic Department sanctioned events while maintaining and organizing the facilities in which these events occur. These functions include but are not limited to assisting with facility scheduling, setup and breakdown of all athletic department events, team practices, team competitions, and facility maintenance and improvement.  

There are several facilities of which the Athletic Department is the primary user, and as such, is responsible for overseeing.  These facilities include the Fowler Athletics Center, Jeff Jacobs JAM Center, Peterson Gym, Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium, Aztec Tennis Complex, SportsDeck, Aquaplex, and the practice fields.

The Facilities and Operations Specialist reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director of Operation – Event Management and serves as the assistant liaison for all functions pertaining to the Operations and Facilities department.  The primary focus is on programmatic oversight of daily functions and responding to and addressing specific departmental event and facility needs. This position handles certain day-to-day tasks that deal with departmental administrative and clerical duties as assigned.  Other responsibilities include coordination of vendors and other external groups that assist with organizing events; controlling inventory of various items; supervising Facilities and Operations staff, interns, and student assistants; and assisting in training new departmental employees.  Specific-sport game management includes football, men’s basketball, and other sports as assigned.  Game day management duties include various detailed tasks of preparation coordinated in a timely and efficient manner.  Advanced planning and proper breakdown following the event are necessary.

Full-time, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

 Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Four or more years’ experience in an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics Facilities and Operations office. 
  • Experience staging Division I football games.

Specialized Skills

  • At least three years’ experience in an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics Facilities and Operations office. 
  • Three years of customer service experience. 
  • Experience in training and supervising student workers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel. 
  • Must be administratively self-sufficient. 
  • Must be able to set own goals and determine how to accomplish results with little direction.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends. 
  • Skills in planning, organizing, and scheduling athletic activities. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Skills in working in a fast-paced environment making decisions in a timely and professional manner, while exercising good judgment. 
  • Knowledge of general building systems. 
  • Must be detail-oriented with accurate results for assigned projects. 
  • Skills to effectively utilize Windows-based applications including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Outlook, and Astra. 
  • Must possess fiscal responsibility and ability to interpret budgets.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,787 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,897 - $7,051 per month. 

 SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
