The Director is an upper-level fundraising professional responsible for raising major gifts support the Fowler College of Business ($100,000+), and reports to the Executive Director of Development, Fowler College of Business and University Initiatives. The Director will oversee the process of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects for identified priorities and initiatives in the Fowler College of Business. The incumbent will work closely with the Dean of the Fowler College of Business and college boards to identify, cultivate and solicit individuals, corporations and foundations with interest in entrepreneurship and innovation. The incumbent is responsible for implementing short- and long-term fundraising goals and is responsible for securing private voluntary support from individuals, corporate and foundation donors to the University. 

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in all facets of development including: gift administration, gift acceptance, prospect management, research, annual giving, volunteer management and communications. They will have demonstrated success as a development professional in a donor-centered fundraising environment and providing volunteer leadership. The candidate will enjoy working in a rapidly changing environment and have familiarity engaging with numerous stakeholders in different areas of a large scale organization. They will be able to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities under time constraints and be able to communicate effectively with a variety of influencers and decision-makers in the development process. The ideal candidate will also be highly organized and possess strong relationship-building skills with a wide variety of constituents. They will appreciate the unique higher education culture of fostering intellectual, artistic, and critical thinking skills, as well as civic mindedness and social justice.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or combination of education and experience
  • Five or more year of experience in major gifts fund raising
  • Success in major gifts fundraising ($100,000+) that demonstrates ability to align strategy development/implementation with pre-approved goals/priorities

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Fund-raising experience in a large, complex university
  • Demonstrated success with comprehensive and/or capital campaigns
  • Planned giving experience

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated. 

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
