Position Summary

The Department of American Indian Studies is an academic department in the College of Arts and Letters, with five tenured/tenure-track faculty, eleven lecturers, approximately ten adjunct faculty, one visiting Fulbright scholar each spring semester, one Administrative Support Coordinator I, one Work Study student assistant, and approximately 15 instructional student assistants. 

The department offers a major and minor in American Indian Studies and provides a wide range of General Education courses. It also provides support to Native American students who attend or plan to attend SDSU, through a variety of special programs, and serves a key role as a campus resource for Native American issues and initiatives.

This position provides support for the department and its associated programs as well as direct office lead responsibilities for the one-person office. The Administrative Coordinator's work is supervised by the Department Chair and should be carried out within the policies set by the department and the chair. 

Responsibilities include the following: planning and managing budgetary and fiscal matters;  course scheduling; assisting with the faculty RTP process; processing paperwork for faculty  appointments; interpreting academic and administrative regulations and policies; gathering  data; assisting committees; hiring and supervising student employees; planning, organizing and  publicizing events; serving as a principal source of information to students, staff, and faculty on  a variety of campus and departmental policies and procedures; and assisting the department in  its collaborations with the American Indian community in San Diego and beyond.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.  Work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

  • Budget experience
  • Lead and/or supervisory experience
  • Experience in the professional use of digital and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.
  • Experience creating flyers and brochures.
  • Experience coordinating administrative support functions for a group.
  • Experience with data entry and updating database records.
  • Experience working with SDSU's student management database.
  • Experience working at special events.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,505 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,505-$5,508 per month. 

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated. 

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
