Position Summary
This position, in collaboration with, and under the direction of, the Dean of Students, provides support to the Cross-Cultural Center. The coordinator of the Cross-Cultural Center helps with innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed towards improving students from diverse populations outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience. The coordinator helps support student assistants, programs, and events in the Center, and oversees Cross Cultural Center operations, including, but not limited to, processing administrative paperwork, developing student assistants’ work schedules, ordering supplies, answering phones, managing email and the website.
This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to diverse students at SDSU Imperial Valley. This position may serve as a mentor advisor to students and will work to design and deliver programs for students, staff, and faculty to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote the SDSU IV Cross Cultural Center and raise awareness of diverse student excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus committees.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in Imperial Valley.

Department Summary
SDSU Imperial Valley is a campus/college of San Diego State University serving the desert area of southeastern California. It is accredited as an integral unit of SDSU and operates under the same governance structure and university policies. Established in 1959 by an act of the State Legislature, SDSU IV offers its programs at two locations in Imperial County: Calexico and Brawley. Offering four-year and two-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and post-baccalaureate credential programs, SDSU Imperial Valley helps matriculated students achieve their higher education goals. Currently, SDSU IV employs 145 faculty and staff members.
The SDSU Imperial Valley Student Affairs unit, working in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity at the San Diego campus, are mutually responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU’s staff and faculty. Areas of services include, but are not limited to, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Educational Opportunity Programs, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Veterans Services, Student Ability Success Center, Student Health Services, Student Life and Leadership, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Testing Services, and Supporting the Associated Students.
Under the direction of the Dean for SDSU Imperial Valley, the Dean of Students is the lead administrator for the Student Affairs unit. The unit works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures, while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals. We aim to foster an affirming campus culture based on the core values of excellence, equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion.

Education and Experience
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Key Qualifications
- Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events
- Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross- cultural needs of ethnically and culturally diverse students
- Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact diverse student communities
- Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations
- Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position
- Bilingual: English-Spanish
- Prior experience in higher education
- Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,610 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
