Position Summary

The Associate Director, in collaboration with and under the direction of, the Director of the Undocumented Resource Center, supports the day-to-day operations and oversight of staff, student employees, volunteers, and interns. The Associate Director collaborates with Center leadership, student staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

The Associate Director’s primary responsibility will be providing effective and hands-on general and academic advising to students who identify as Undocumented and of Mixed Immigration Status. As such, the Associate Director will play an integral role in supporting students’ graduation goals and in providing students access to services they need to be successful. The Associate Director will also independently support initiatives related to recruitment and retention and manage the Dreamer Mentor Program or assist to manage the URC Dream Scholars Program.

The Associate Director will also assume a shared role in creating a physical space, which fosters safe, inclusive, and affirming social and educational interactions for URC students utilizing the Center. This position will represent SDSU to external community and governmental organizations. The position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to highly sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues particularly as they relate to URC and other underrepresented groups. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students and as a resource to other faculty/staff members on campus. This position will promote the URC and raise awareness of related issues through supporting events, representation on campus-wide committees, programs, and materials.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Basic Needs Center/ECRT; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach and Success; Communications Services; Counseling and Psychological Services; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Financial Center: Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; Cultural Centers; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related. 

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master’s degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Key Qualifications

  • Documented experience developing, coordinating, and assessing programs, trainings, workshops, and events.
  • Ability to utilize effective interpersonal and intrapersonal skills in order to collaborate and work with others.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, or a related field. 
  • Bilingual or multilingual.
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse populations of undocumented and mixed immigration background students. 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff. 
  • At least two years of experience managing professional and student staff in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience working with URC students in a higher education setting.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,732 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,732 - $8,176 per month.
