The Co-Lead Academic Advisor serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business (FCB) assigned to the Center for Student Success (CSS). Under general supervision, the position provides individual and group information and advising for a student population of approximately 8,000 undergraduates in Business Administration, participates as a team member in the development of Center for Student Success policies and procedures, and supports SDSU’s Coordinated Care Advising network.
The Co-Lead Academic Advisor will be responsible for the academic advising of an assigned caseload of prospective and current undergraduate students and graduation candidates within the Fowler College of Business. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the position will advise students through individual appointments, group advising sessions, over email, in person, telephone, and Zoom. The position will counsel academically at-risk students and those not making progress towards impaction or degree requirements to identify possible solutions and make referrals to appropriate College and campus resources.
The Co-Lead Academic Advisor will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to identify and review key academic advising initiatives, make strategic recommendations, assist with tasks and projects that promote academic advising, student success, retention rates and time to graduation. In addition, this position will train new and current academic advisors and act as a lead for the academic advising staff members. Some evenings and weekend hours will be required.
The position is an integral part of the Center for Student Success team and will provide staffing support at related events and assist other staff members as needed for successful maintenance of the unit’s goals.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a College Operations Manager, a Director of Marketing & Communications, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for Assessment, a Director for the Career Management Center, and a Managing Director for the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business.
The Center for Student Success (CSS) within the College provides all academic and informational advising for current, prospective, and former students in the Undergraduate Program. It also focuses on students experiencing academic difficulty and those participating in special programs. It provides assistance to students in filling out academic forms and petitions, and in understanding university and college policies, requirements and procedures. The unit is responsible for implementing all policies, procedures, and decisions made regarding currently attending Business majors. The unit coordinates the following: primary commencement function (undergraduate for approximately 1,800 students/11,000 guests); undergraduate academic advising, tutoring, study abroad, incoming first-year and transfer student orientation among others.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, their support system, faculty, and staff and to work as a member of a team.
- Experience using MS Office Suite (or Google Workspace) and familiarity with web-based applications.
- Flexibility, and attention to detail are required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Must maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
