The Associate Director of Residential Education for Academic Success (ADRE) serves as a key leader in supporting 7,500–9,000 residential students through innovative academic programs and student-centered leadership.
Key Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Education for Academic Success, the ADRE will:
- Supervise 6–10 full-time professional staff, including General Advisors and Retention Specialists (GARS) and/or Coordinated Care Advisors (CCAs).
- Oversee operations and programming for residential STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) Resource Centers/Tutoring Centers.
- Coordinate recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of GARS/CCAs, STAR Center Assistants (SCAs), and peer tutors.
- Develop and implement academic support initiatives and holistic student success programs.
- Provide crisis management, student advisement, and budget planning in collaboration with departmental leadership.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty, university leadership, public agencies, and professional organizations.
- Participate in Residential Education programs and support additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Position Information
- This is a full-time, at-will role, offering comprehensive benefits.
- Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary
The Residential Education Office is designated as the University department responsible for planning and administering programs and services in on-campus housing communities including those in traditional residence halls and apartment complexes. The Residential Education Office serves to enhance student life and success through a comprehensive living-learning experience that provides academic and personal support, contact with faculty, educational programs, community activities, student leadership development, and multicultural learning opportunities. The department is part of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity/Dean of Students sub-division.
The Residential Education Office strives to provide safe and supportive on campus living learning communities where diverse students are challenged to develop holistically; as scholars, citizens and leaders.
Residential Education staff members are dedicated to providing curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance residents’ academic success, awareness and appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility.

Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in an academic advising environment.

- Proven ability to make sound, independent decisions in managing the daily operations of residence halls, including urgent, complex, and confidential matters.
- Strong counseling and interpersonal skills in areas such as student development, conflict resolution, crisis management, family relations, and group dynamics.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and support staff in handling crisis intervention, behavioral issues, staff motivation, and conflict resolution.
- Skilled in evaluating staff performance both verbally and in writing, with a focus on leveraging strengths and fostering professional development.
- Effective leadership in organizing and coordinating committees and projects to meet departmental goals and deadlines.
- High degree of initiative and independence when working in dynamic and complex environments.
- Experience in planning and facilitating training and orientation sessions for staff and student organizations.
- Strong relationship-building skills with diverse individuals and groups across campus and the broader community.
- Ability to request, interpret, and apply data to address current issues, guide decision-making, and inform strategic planning.
- Familiarity with campus and community resources and the ability to connect individuals with appropriate services.
