Position Summary

SDSU Facilities Services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university.

Under general supervision and in cooperation with the Assistant Director of Custodial Services, the Lead Custodian prioritizes and coordinates the work of an area, laying-out, assigning, directing and assisting the work of custodians and student assistants in the performance of custodial work.  The incumbent also monitors and ensures the completion of custodial duties.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday – Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

Must possess a valid California Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of work experience as a Custodian or equivalent position.
  • Three or more years of experience leading or supervising employees.
  • Working knowledge or general understanding of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Previous experience maintaining wood flooring surfaces, vinyl composite tile, LVT, asbestos composite tile and carpet care.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education and training.
  • Completion of APPA Supervisor’s Tool Kit or equivalent training.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,231 per month.

Classification Salary Range: $3,128 - $5,138 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
