Position Summary

The Sociology Department serves about 350 to 400 undergraduate majors and 35 graduate students in the Sociology master’s degree program and in the Criminology joint-master’s degree program in coordination with the Criminal Justice Department. Our faculty include 13 full-time professors and 10 part-time lecturers with teaching and research interests that include immigration, migration, and border issues, globalization, gender, social psychology, mental illness, work, health and illness, education, deviance, and crime. The Sociology Department serves a central role in the College of Arts and Letters and in the broader University and San Diego regional and border communities.

This position provides support for the faculty as well as direct office lead and student supervisor responsibilities. The Administrative Support Coordinator’s work is supervised by the department chair and should be carried out within the policies set by the department and the chair. The position serves as lead for the Administrative Support Assistant II. Responsibilities include planning and overseeing budgetary and fiscal matters, course scheduling, interpreting academic and administrative regulations and policies, responding to inquiries from students and the public, gathering data, assisting committees, coordinating student employees, and overseeing academic and non-academic personnel processes.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages are also a prerequisite.

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lead and/or supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations in a university setting.
  • Experience maintaining budgets.
  • Experience coordinating administrative support functions for a group.
  • Experience with data entry and updating database records.
  • Experience working with SDSU's student management database.
  • Experience working at special events.

Specialized Skills

• Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,440 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,440 - $5,639 per month. 

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
