Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University.  Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach and Success; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.     

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity 

The Division facilitates the academic and career success, personal growth, and well-being of all students, and works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures. We aim to foster an affirming campus culture based on the core values of excellence, equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion through:

  • Recruiting and retaining faculty and staff who are reflective of the diverse student body and communities served by SDSU and recruiting students who are representative of the rich diversity of the region and the world.

Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Assistant Coordinator provides support for the day-to-day administrative, space management, marketing, and fiscal operations of the Pride Center to ensure effective and efficient processes. The Assistant Coordinator also provides support to the Pride Center’s innovative efforts and integrated approaches in identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall LGBTQIA+ student experience. The Assistant Coordinator assists in the Pride Center’s major events and collaborating with students, staff, faculty, and campus/community partners to implement trainings, programs, and services of the Pride Center to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability.

Full-time, temporary position expected to end on or before 6/30/2023 with the possibility of reappointment.  This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. 

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture.

  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse populations of LGBTQIA+ students.

  • Competency in cross-cultural communication.

  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, and creativity.

  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

Specialized Skills

  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.

  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.

  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.

  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.

  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.

  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.

  • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,513 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,513-$4,298 per month. 

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
