PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs the Diversity Advisor establishes working partnerships with on-campus and off-campus stakeholders to ensure the University meets its enrollment goals and objectives. The Diversity Admissions Advisor will liaise with campus and community stakeholders in order to serve as a student advocate.  The incumbent will also coordinate student support services including but not limited to college transition assistance, academic success strategies, financial education, career/leadership development and Guided Pathways.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for supporting efforts to ensure annual diversity goals are developed and communicated with and to EMSA staff and management. Coordinates diversity outreach by leveraging the initiatives and talent through the daily or work of the admissions counselors that may coordinate and conduct workshops on Admissions, EOP, Residential Housing, Financial Aid Information, campus affinity groups, the Office of Inclusive Excellence and other important student related programs.
  • Makes determinations regarding school, academic, aspirational and other student characteristics for potential eligibility for CSUMB pathways/special admissions and recommends educational goals for students. Develops and maintains micro-target prospect markets, prepares reports, and utilizes EMSA data and reports facilitate positive and consistent movement through the enrollment funnel from prospective student to enrolled student to retained student, in conjunction with EMSA staff.
  • Designs strategies and planning for events and presentations at on-campus and off-campus functions, representing the university at college fairs when appropriate and provide counseling and detailed information to potential high school and community college students and their families.
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations, to build partnerships and recruit prospective students. Identifies issues, reviews and proposes policies, and recommends improvement to the admissions evaluations processes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑ related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:  Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.   A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

  • The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Knowledge of behavioral, emotional, social, academic trajectory of at-risk and diverse students and familiarity with the Project Rebound program and the CSUMB campus is preferred.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
  • Exhibits empathy and cultural sensitivity, with strong communication skills for effective advocacy and participant support.
  • Utilizes data analysis and critical thinking for program evaluation, adapting strategies to overcome barriers and meet participant needs.
  • Demonstrates leadership and collaborative abilities, motivating participants and fostering a community that encourages growth and learning.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
