Typical Activities
Under minimal supervision of the Children's Center Director, the Master Teacher will work independently to:
Responsibilities:
• Provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for children enrolled in our program.
• Prepare and implement daily activities tailored to the individual needs of each child and be willing to adjust the curriculum as necessary.
• Be a DAP role model of effective teacher-child interaction in the implementation of the daily operation of the program.
• Able to articulate program goals and philosophy and apply them to working with the children and other adults working in the program.
• Manage children’s behavior using positive guidance techniques and limit setting.
• Plan for and facilitate smooth transitions for the children.
• Ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and supervisors.
• Work with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
• Communicate consistently with the Director regarding the functioning of the classroom (progress, problems, and concerns).
• Establish positive and productive relationships and communicate effectively with families (approachable, tactful, keeps parents informed, seeks a partnership with parents, work with parents to promote understanding of their child’s growth and development).
• Maintain confidentiality of children and families.
Duties:
• Monitor the daily schedule in the classroom.
• Monitor break/lunch times for staff.
• Monitor and support diaper changes and toilet learning for each child
• Ensure that teacher: child ratios are maintained at all times.
• Ensure that health checks are being carried out when each child is dropped off.
• Maintain classroom bulletin boards that provide current parent information and represent children’s interests and learning.
• Participate in and conduct on-going staff development trainings and meetings.
• Supervise and train Assistant Teachers by providing guidance and direction. Includes training in routines such as mealtimes, nap, diapering, and clean-up procedures.
• Supervise and train undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and others in daily activities of the lab school, including student observations, research, student interns, etc.
• Provide evaluative input to the Director regarding staff members’ performance.
• Ensure developmentally appropriate activities are planned and implemented by staff daily.
• Maintain child assessments and developmental evaluations (DRDP’s).
• Maintain and regularly update NAEYC classroom portfolios.
• Participate in parent orientation and new staff orientation at the beginning of each quarter.
• Conduct parent-teacher conferences.
• Follow State health and safety guidelines, maintain records according to State guidelines, and ensure that all teachers are doing the same.
• Assist in monitoring the Center according to licensing regulations.
• Attend conferences and training to progress in professional growth.
• Follow procedures related to the health and safety (including general hygiene of young children, e.g., diaper changing and toileting).
• Cleaning responsibilities: maintenance of order and neatness in kitchen, storage room, observation room, and all classroom and outdoor areas.
• Report any suspected case of child abuse or neglect to CPS.
