Position
The Visual Arts Department invites applications for tenure-track assistant professor position in drawing and painting. Candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in drawing and painting, with emphasis on contemporary studio practices. We are seeking candidates who will actively contribute to the Department and University through administrative services and in creating a community of students, faculty, and staff richly diverse in cultural background.
CSUF faculty are committed teachers/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. This candidate could teach conceptually based painting practice, beginning to advanced figure painting, undergraduate critique courses and graduate level seminars. This person will be responsible for a sustained contemporary practice and active scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.
Required Qualifications
- M.F.A. in Drawing and Painting or related field
- A Sustained and current exhibition record that demonstrates commitment to creative studio practice
- Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching
- Ability to balance teaching, creative research, and service
- Ability to use technology effectively in context of teaching, advising and committee work
- Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students from intersecting marginalized social groups
Preferred Qualifications
- Distinction as an artist working primarily in Painting and Drawing
- Expertise in the history and current practices in the field of Painting and Drawing and knowledge of contemporary art issues.
- Significant national and/or international exhibition record
- Successful scholarly and creative research accomplishments including but not limited to publications, grants, residencies, and fellowships
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate students
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines

The Visual Arts Department
The Department of Visual Arts serves approximately 2,600 undergraduate art majors and 20 graduate students, with 36 full-time and 90+ lecturer faculty. The department offers both a BA in Art and BFA in Art with 13 areas of concentration, in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with 9 areas of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and presents a full range of fine arts and professional programs including a nationally recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. graduate studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from campus. Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,884 to $7,022 per month.
Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm.
Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
