Effective Date: August 18, 2025 (Fall Semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688/per year. The anticipated hiring range is $80,000 to $95,000/per year. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in educational leadership, higher education/student affairs, or a related discipline. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2025.
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching, mentoring, and advising of diverse students at the graduate level
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment and engaging effectively with a racially, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse student population
- Demonstrated history of working successfully with a diverse college student population, including Black/African American, Latine/x, Native American/Indigenous, low-income, first-generation, minoritized students, and varied immigration and citizenship status
- Demonstrated evidence of, or potential to, develop and sustain, a productive research agenda using critical methodologies or theories to study community colleges, racialized experiences in higher education, and/or students, faculty or staff at minority serving institutions aligned with department, college, and university missions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated effectiveness in, or the potential for, teaching graduate-level courses related to: diversity, equity and justice in U.S. higher education; research methods; assessment and institutional effectiveness; teaching and learning in higher education; foundations of student affairs; counseling and advising in higher education/student affairs; student development theory; and/or theories of adult development and counseling.
- Demonstrated effectiveness with, or the potential for, teaching online and/or hybrid courses
- Previous professional experience in counseling/advising and/or student affairs coordinator, managerial, or leadership positions in community colleges or 4-year higher education institutions
- Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in instruction, instructionally related and/or coordination work directly related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g.
, Intergroup Dialogue or other dialogue models, culturally relevant pedagogy and/or social justice advocacy.)
- Demonstrated effectiveness in the ability to work on multiple tasks (e.g., courses, committees, scholarship) simultaneously, take initiative, communicate effectively, and work independently
- Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in, or potential for, supporting students’ graduate-level writing
- Demonstrated effectiveness in, or potential for, thesis and/or dissertation advising, including supervision of quantitative thesis/dissertations
- Involvement in state, regional, and national professional associations
- Experience using critical theories and/or critical methodologies (qualitative and/or quantitative)
- Demonstrates experience of successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
- Experience supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse higher education classroom
Duties:
- Teach master’s and doctoral level courses to new practitioners and working professionals. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof. (Most courses are likely to be taught face-to-face.)
- Chair theses and dissertations
- Provide advising and support to graduate students throughout their experience
- Conduct and disseminate research related to higher education and/or student affairs
- Engage in service and governance activities at the program, department, college, and university levels, including elected positions
- Engage in activities such as attending program and department meetings, student programs/activities (e.g. retreats, workshops, etc.) committee service, dissertation/thesis committee service, review of reviewing program applications, participation in applicant interviews, and reading master’s students comprehensive exams and doctoral student qualifying papers and other duties as assigned
- Maintain active presence at national, state, and regional professional organizations

The Department of Educational Leadership is composed of the Educational Leadership Doctorate Program, the Master’s of Education in Educational Administration, the Master’s of Science in Counseling, Student Development in Higher Education, the Preliminary California Administrative Services Credential, the Community College Certificate and is affiliated with the Center for Evaluation and Educational Effectiveness. The faculty and staff support dynamic, transformative, socially responsible leaders who engage others, value diversity, operate with academic integrity and believe in people and their educational futures. The department prides itself on its highly collaborative, student-centered academic community.
Student Development in Higher Education: The MS in Counseling, Student Development in Higher Education (SDHE) program prepares graduates to work in two- and four-year colleges and related institutions. The profession is focused on student-centered learning, drawing upon an established and growing body of research, based in traditional disciplines, emerging theoretical perspectives, and principles of human diversity and potential. The SDHE program seeks to develop reflective, scholar-practitioners with an understanding of:
- The multiple needs of college students
- The interaction of the learners with the college environment
- Learning styles
- Diversity and multicultural issues
- Program development
- The use of developmental and counseling theory in assisting students
- The role of the student development educator in collaborative relationships with faculty and others to support the holistic development of students
- Assessment and evaluation
Graduates of the SDHE program enter the profession able to apply theory to practice and to integrate research using the tenets of counseling, student development, administration, leadership, and multicultural issues in education. Our graduates assume positions in two- and four-year colleges and related institutions. Typical offices of employment include: leadership development, financial aid, career counseling, student activities, residential life, educational opportunity, mentoring, academic advising, orientation, and learning communities.
Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership: The Educational Leadership Doctorate program is designed for working professionals seeking training to become highly qualified educational leaders for P-12 school districts or community colleges. Representatives from P-12 school districts and community colleges work collaboratively with CSULB faculty and administrators to design, implement, and evaluate this program. Emphasis is placed on the expanding and changing role of education for social change to meet the needs of society. Graduate students in a learning cohort community will experience an interdisciplinary approach to the study of educational leadership, teaching and learning, organizational development, management and research.

Clinical practice is central to programs in the College of Education. With over 100 area clinical practice partnerships, students within the College of Education gain invaluable hands-on experience with faculty mentors and skilled practitioners who help provide real world experience in diverse, urban settings, augmenting classroom instruction.
