Position Description

Job Summary

The Learning Experience Specialist is part of the EOD department which is dedicated to supporting an engaged, innovative and competitive workforce and organization that is strategically positioned to enhance the effectiveness of Cal Poly and maximize the success of our students.  Reporting to the Senior Director for Employee Experience and Organization Development, the Learning Experience Specialist is responsible for supporting Cal Poly’s strategic goals by designing and developing instructional content, leading and promoting the use of our learning management system (LMS), managing our website and social media presence, developing strategic learning plans, identifying and analyzing metrics including utilizing the LMS and campus people management platforms for reporting, and assessing campus learning and development needs. The specialist actively coordinates and leads workshops, activities and programs; manages reporting and data analysis efforts; partners with team members to align and continuously improve; and collaborates with campus stakeholders to advocate for a learning culture.  

Department Summary

The Human Resources (HR) and Employee & Organization Development (EOD) departments within University Personnel at Cal Poly lead workplace strategies that enable our approximately 3000 employees (staff, faculty and management) to thrive in their roles.  Through traditional practices like recruitment, benefits, employee relations, information systems and performance management to strategic practices like professional development, organization development, workforce planning, and engagement, HR and EOD are dedicated to cultivating the excellence of all employees.  

Key Qualifications

  • Strong project management skills in developing, coordinating, delivering and refining high quality learning.  Demonstrated skill in developing projects and activities of high complexity which require the utilization of effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and consult with individuals at all organizational levels by establishing business partner and stakeholder relationships based on personal credibility, trust, and respect.
  • Demonstrated skill utilizing a variety of methods to discover, capture, and distribute available information and resources to provide learners with targeted, high-quality intellectual assets including social media and newsletter artifacts.
  • Demonstrated skill with a variety of current Learning Management Systems (LMS), and demonstrated skill in applying a variety of learning technologies and online publishing programs to address specific learning and performance needs.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the independent design and development of informal and formal learning solutions to meet organizational needs.  Skill in analyzing and selecting the most appropriate strategy, methodologies and technologies to maximize the learning experience and impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently extract broad organizational patterns from detailed information and disparate sources with a proven track record of aligning development activities to support and influence long-term objectives.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Four years of technical or administrative experience.  A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.  Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $85,000 - $101,340 Per Year

Classification Range: $66,444 - $120,168 Per Year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Supplemental Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
