Position Summary

San Diego State University’s Facilities Services is looking for an Associate Director of Operations to provide operational leadership and oversight of facilities maintenance and projects. If you're passionate about maintaining high standards and ensuring quality service, we want you on our team!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational leadership and oversight of facilities maintenance (preventive and deferred) and maintenance projects.
  • Lead the management of a large and complex budget with a variety of funding sources and cost centers.
  • Engage in effective communication with a variety of stakeholders, including deans, directors, department chairs, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Identify campus needs and expectations, and coordinate to assure quality service is consistently provided by Facilities Services.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, inspect work performed in-house and by outside contractors, and ensure safe work practices.
  • Oversee performance management, including evaluations, staff development, training, and counseling.
  • Play a key role in university emergency preparedness.
  • Provide insight and assistance in support of various administrative, engineering, and management functions.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time, at-will role, offering comprehensive benefits.
  • Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University.

SDSU Facilities Services (FS) is a customer-service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs approximately 250 employees and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of four-year degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Organizational Leadership, or Business Administration or a related field or a combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of progressive management responsibility in a large, complex facilities management organization with a wide range of facility types, sizes and ages. (Preferred settings include military, university and municipality).

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a diverse organization and interact with various levels of management, staff, faculty, and outside constituents
  • Proven experience in effective leadership, management and engagement in a challenging and complex work environment
  • Proven ability to solve a wide range of problems and develop practical solutions
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers
  • Proven ability to plan, organize and prioritize work and projects
  • Excellent time management skills, strategic process development, and organizational analysis ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of automated building management systems and experience utilizing a computerized maintenance management system
  • Proficiency with computerized programs, applications, and reporting tools
  • Five years managing energy and utility infrastructure systems preferred.
  • Experience in unionized setting preferred.

License/Certification

  • Valid California driver’s license is required within 10 days of hire.
  • Professional Engineers License (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Environmental) preferred.
  • Current Certified Energy Manager or Energy Manager in Training designation or other relevant certification or certification preferred.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional or Green Associate designation preferred.
  • Lean Black Belt or similar certification preferred.

The expected hiring salary for this position ranges from $130,000 to $150,000 annually.
