Position Summary 

San Diego State University’s Research Support Services is looking for an Administrative Analyst/Specialist, Non-Exempt to implement policies and procedures associated with SDSU research, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and university policies. Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement policies and procedures associated with SDSU research, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and university policies.
  • Provide guidance to investigators in research protocol development.
  • Conduct preliminary screening of protocol applications to identify problems and issues that may prohibit a complete review or compromise regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare documents and agenda for meetings, record and maintain minutes, and facilitate correspondence to communicate committee action.
  • Maintain records in accordance with federal regulations and generate reports detailing committee activities.
  • Facilitate designated and full committee reviews of new research, modifications to existing research, and renewals of existing research.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Research and Innovation is an administrative unit with 35 part and full-time employees. The Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) is responsible for university-wide advocacy for research, scholarship and graduate education. The VPRI reports to the President, is a member of the President's Cabinet and the Academic Deans' Council, and provides leadership and coordination of all research and graduate activities at San Diego State University. The VPRI provides leadership and guidance to sponsored research activities within the San Diego State University Research Foundation, represents the university externally to major funding agencies, and oversees research regulatory committees. The Division of Research and Innovation carries out its charge through several units including Research Support Services. Research Support Services is responsible for review of all grants and contracts, research assurances, regulatory compliance/integrity, oversight of regulatory and research promotion committees, and liaison with the SDSU Research Foundation.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skill in research compliance related monitoring, auditing and/or investigations
  • Proven ability to understand and interpret, without guidance or supervision, complex general policy guidelines, making independent decisions and initiating action.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to write and prepare clear and concise reports, presentations and correspondence; ability to interact effectively with diverse levels of personnel over the telephone, computer and in person.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to analyze situations, attention to detail, identify existing or potential problems, recommend solutions, determine and implement procedures to accomplish effective resolution, and evaluate results or progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify training needs.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe suite of products.
  • Rely on problem solving skills to overcome obstacles and effectively drive issues/problems to resolution.
  • Effectively build and grow relationships with a wide variety of campus personnel including administrators and faculty; the campus research community; and operational personnel focused on detailed/specific duties.
  • Certified Professional IACUC Administration (CPIA) preferred. 
  • Research experience working with animals and biohazards preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,663 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,879 - $7,488 per month.
