Position Summary

Join Our Team as an Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Manager at SDSU!

Are you passionate about creating a safe and healthy work environment? SDSU's Environment Health and Safety department is looking for a dedicated Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Manager to ensure compliance and promote best practices across our campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety Leadership: Oversee workshop safety, construction safety, fire & life safety, ergonomics, and more.
  • Program Management: Manage worker’s compensation, safety committees, safety surveys, and indoor air quality.
  • Health Monitoring: Conduct exposure monitoring, manage personal protective equipment, and oversee medical surveillance.
  • Training & Development: Lead safety training initiatives, including Learning Management Systems.
  • Special Projects: Handle asbestos/lead/crystalline silica program management and other EHS-related tasks.

Team Collaboration:

  • Direct Reports: Manage and mentor two team members.
  • Leadership: Report directly to the EH&S Assistant Director and collaborate closely with the EH&S leadership team.
  • Policy Development: Work with EH&S staff to develop policies, procedures, and training for campus compliance.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time, at-will role, offering comprehensive benefits.
  • Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

Environment Health and Safety is responsible for development and implementation of programs aimed at protecting the campus community and providing compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes. This department reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health or Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related STEM field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in each of the following areas: Workshop/Construction Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire & Life Safety, Construction Plan Review, Worker’s Compensation support, Ergonomics, Hazardous Waste, and Laboratory Safety.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Occupational & Construction Safety Program management.
  • Working knowledge of Medical Waste & Hazardous Waste regulations.
  • Practical application of fire safety protocols applied to occupational safety.
  • Plan check capability for offices, construction diagrams, food facilities, research labs and health service areas.
  • A thorough understanding of Industrial Hygiene investigation and sampling methods.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with team members of various levels, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations including but not limited to Cal/OSHA CCR Title 8 Regulations and OSHA CFR Title 29 Part 1910.

The expected hiring salary for this position ranges from $85,000 to $95,000 annually.
