Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at San Diego State University seeks graduate students for Teaching Associate (TA) positions.

The department is seeking TA applicants for the following labs: COMPE 160, COMPE 375, COMPE 470L, EE 330L, EE 430L, EE 458L, and EE/COMPE 491W.

The successful applicant will supervise one or more lab sections.

Anticipated Appointment Dates: This position is open until filled.

Fall 2025: August 20, 2025 - December 31, 2025

Spring 2026: January 15, 2026 - May 21, 2026

Hours/Units per week: Students can work up to 20-hours per week.

  • 1-unit is equivalent to 2 hours and 40 minutes per week
  • The typical range for labs is between 2-wtus - 6-wtus (dependent on number of section(s) assigned)

Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course to which the teaching associate will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member in charge of the course:

  • Instruct and manage the classroom
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities
  • Explain and supervise instructional activities
  • Respond to and evaluate student writing
  • Assist students outside of class during office hours and by appointment
  • Maintain office hours
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on written assignments
  • Assess student in-class performance and, if applicable, support faculty instructor in integrating such performance into students’ final course grade
  • Maintain records of students’ attendance
  • Attend weekly meetings with the supervising faculty to discuss curriculum, instructional activities, and/or grading criteria
  • Determine course grades

Qualifications: A candidate for the position of TA in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Admission to a Graduate Program in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and have a minimum GPA 3.0
  2. Enrollment in at least 1 course
  3. Demonstrated, satisfactory progress towards the degree
  4. Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students
  5. Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned

The California State University Teaching Associate Classification and Standards

  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
  • Salary Schedule: The CSU Salary Schedule can be found here (Class Code = 2354 for Teaching Associates).
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11, a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department teaching associate position.
  • TAs are student positions for those actively enrolled in a graduate program at San Diego State University.
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
