Position Summary

Under general supervision and in cooperation with the manager of Landscape Services, the Lead Groundsworker prioritizes and coordinates the work of the Parking Maintenance and Events team, assigns, directs, and assists work of the team, supports Parking Services, and performs other tasks as assigned by the manager in support of the university and Facilities Services.  Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Daily Work Assignment and Oversight: Assigns work, monitors work progress, performs quality control checks and inspects completed work, trains and provides work direction to shop personnel, and may provide input to the appropriate manager on evaluations. Creates and assigns work orders. 

Exterior Cleaning and Trash Removal: Responsible for coordinating and participating in all cleaning and maintenance of parking structures and lots, including elevators and stairwells.

Shop Supplies and Equipment and Documentation: Requisitions supplies and equipment; tracks shop material and equipment; complete the documentation for work orders.

Construction Site Assistance: Tasks include preparing the construction area, performing rough repair work and demolition, removing debris, hauling material/supplies, and assisting skilled trades.

Maintenance and Operation of Shop and General Support: Maintains and services tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; performs shop clean-up and maintains a safe and clean work area; assists Custodial Services, Landscape Services, and Trades staff in the accomplishment of their work (projects, events, ongoing programs); and performs other duties as assigned by the manager in support of the University and Facilities Services.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated as non-exempt under the FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 3:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., but they may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure, and human resources at San Diego State University.

SDSU Facilities Services (FS) is a customer-service-based organization that provides facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the university's academic and research mission. Facilities Services employs approximately 250 employees and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

Education and Experience

Two years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.

Key Qualifications

  • Prior experience at a similar higher education environment, or a large multi-building facility environment.
  • Ability to drive manual transmission vehicle.
  • Two years of experience in a labor- or maintenance-related field is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications Required

A valid California Driver's License is required within ten days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,253 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,721 - $6,284 per month.
