Position Summary

Under general supervision, and in accordance with schedules or instruction, the Facilities Services Laborer performs a wide range of laborer duties which includes, but not limited to, events set up, moving furniture and heavy items, assist with grounds maintenance, hanging banners, taking vehicles for routine maintenance, assist with repairs, assist with shipping and receiving, cleaning and caring for campus facilities at SDSU Imperial Valley (Calexico and Brawley).

Perform work in a manner that supports and facilitates the work of others in the campus community. Maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the department and campus community by practicing individual dignity, using tact and diplomacy, and always being respectful and civil. Respectful communication when dealing with people in all situations; demonstrating restraint, fairness and firmness. Works effectively to understand by carefully listening and working to be understood.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end one year from start date, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is located at SDSU Imperial Valley in Calexico, CA, approximately 120 miles east of the San Diego main campus. 

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in Imperial Valley (Calexico and Brawley).

Department Summary

SDSU Imperial Valley is a campus/college of San Diego State University serving the desert area of southeastern California. It is accredited as an integral unit of SDSU and operates under the same governance structure and university policies. Established in 1959 by an act of the State Legislature, SDSU IV offers its programs at two locations in Imperial County: Calexico and Brawley. Offering four-year and two-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and post-baccalaureate credential programs, SDSU Imperial Valley helps matriculated students achieve their higher education goals. Currently, SDSU IV employs 145 faculty and staff members.

The Imperial Valley Campus is administered by the Dean of the Campus, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Imperial Valley Campus Administrator, the Associate Director of Development, and the Assistant Director for Facilities Services & Projects.

Key Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams as well as individually. 
  • Working knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in receiving, storing, packing, and shipping materials and supplies.  General knowledge of methods of taking inventories and maintaining inventory records.
  • Ability to match names and numbers quickly and accurately; keep simple records and make simple reports; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; make simple mathematical calculations; operate powered materials handling equipment; apply safe methods of moving heavy supplies and equipment; perform manual labor.
  • One year of experience assisting in the receipt, storage, or issuance of materials from a centralized stockroom or warehouse, including some experience in the operation of forklift trucks or similar power-operated materials handling equipment is preferred.
  • Operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies. 
  • General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials and tools.
  • Basic knowledge of using a computer and general safety practices.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,600 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,505 - $5,671 per month.
