Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Facilities Services & Projects, the Custodian is responsible for providing general cleaning and custodial care and support of assigned campus buildings, facilities, SDSU auxiliary buildings/areas, and structures including but not limited to, campus offices, classrooms, art rooms, auditorium, patios, entryways and walkways.  Custodial staff may work independently or as part of a custodial team maintaining the campus facilities in a sanitary condition.   Perform minor maintenance, clean and care for classrooms, offices, laboratories, rest rooms, common areas (hallways, lobbies), library, auditorium, gallery, student union, in support of the academic function.

This is an intermittent hourly, temporary position with an appointment end date one year from start date. Work hours are on an as-needed basis and will vary based on operational needs. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

This position is located at SDSU Imperial Valley in Calexico, CA, approximately 120 miles east of the San Diego main campus. 

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in Imperial Valley.

Department Summary

SDSU Imperial Valley is a campus/college of San Diego State University serving the desert area of southeastern California. It is accredited as an integral unit of SDSU and operates under the same governance structure and university policies. Established in 1959 by an act of the State Legislature, SDSU IV offers its programs at two locations in Imperial County: Calexico and Brawley. Offering four-year and two-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and post-baccalaureate credential programs, SDSU Imperial Valley helps matriculated students achieve their higher education goals. Currently, SDSU IV employs 145 faculty and staff members.

The Imperial Valley Campus is administered by the Dean of the Campus, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Imperial Valley Campus Administrator, the Associate Director of Development, and the Assistant Director for Facilities Services & Projects.

Key Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams as well as individually.
  • Ability to work effectively with the campus community; dependable and responsible.
  • Possession of High School diploma.
  • 2 years of experience in working in custodial work is preferred.
  • Knowledge of general safety practices with cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Basic knowledge on how to use a computer.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • A valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $20.22 per hour. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. 

CSU Classification Salary Range: $20.22 - $27.20 per hour.
